The price of these discontinued or rare items continues to rise as they will not be replaced or added to. This has enabled many merchanters in runescape to profit substantially by investing in the probability of a price increase over time. However, there is a tendency for prices to drop at stages as well due to the significant amounts of money involved, merchanting rare items in runescape is not for the feint hearted.

Many of the rare items serve no meangingful purpose other than being rare and therefore are more collectable by players in general. During 2005-2006, prices for runescape rare items increased significantly as new skills were introduced to the game. The probability is that these rare items may continue to rise in price but definately not at the rates they increased through 2005-2006.
