Forming a Runescape Clan

by: Tuami

Many runescape players intend to start a runescape clan so they can fight in the wilderness alongside their friends and hope the clan grows to become a force within the game. However, most people do not plan sufficiently well enough to guarantee the long term survival of the clan should any key member leave or become inactive.

This guide is aimed at giving a brief outline for a successful clan formation in runescape.

Runescape Clan Formation Outline:

1. Clan Name:

One of the most successful clans in runescape has been Damage Incorporated or DI when their abbreviation is used. The name and the initials are easily identified by any player who is involved on the runescape clan scene. The aim for any new clan should be to carefully construct a meaningful name that can also have an easily understood abbreviation that enables players to quickly identify the clan. It is also important to have a name that future members will want to fight to defend the clan honour.

2. Clan Ethics:

Each clan should be formed with an initial list of clan rules or clan ethics. This will help the new clan attract the right sort of person from the outset and avoid tarnishing the clan image before they become known to the runescape clan community. A good image is hard to achieve while a bad image is very easily achieved. My experience is that players generally opt to join a clan when they have a good image and are relatively honorable.

The clan ethics should govern the general clan behaviour on fan sites, forums and within runescape itself. The clan leader or clan council should set out the basic rules to cover all of the following issues:

  • a) Whether the clan is pking based, skill based on a mixture of both;
  • b) If the clan is free to play or member based;
  • c) The basic behaviour expected on forums, on fan sites and ingame;
  • d) The clan view on common issues such as luring, running from battle and DM situations;
  • e) Clan ranks and hierarchy;
  • f) Punishment for clan rule breaking;

3. Clan Communication:

Every successful clan in runescape relies on some form of communication in order for all members to understand key decisions and strategies used while fighting in the wilderness. Many clans will use Teamspeak as this offers real time communication and is the most effective means to stay organised.

At the very least, a clan should have an mIRC channel to help clan members get to know each other and aid co-ordination in the wilderness. This is not always ideal but can get most people informed of important decisions quickly. In addition, a clan forum to complement a clan mIRC channel will enable members to get to know each other over time instead of real time that mIRC enables.

4. Clan Requirements and Recruitment Strategy:

A new clan in runescape cannot expect to be able to attract all level 126 combatants and therefore must set realistic clan requirements for combat and experience.

Runescape offers 3 classes of combatant, mage, melee and range. All 3 types of player has their strengths and weaknesses and combined can be a strong force. Most top clans have a mixture of all types of player with melee being the dominant type.

In addition to combat level, many clans should require some form of referral system in order to gently introduce new members so they are not overawed and quickly disillusioned should they not be welcomed by the majority of existing clan members initially. The referral system also ensures that new members will know at least 1 other person in the clan that they can ask for assistance when required.

5. Clan Events:

Any successful clan in runescape will be able to offer events outside of the wilderness as well as regular pk trips. It goes without saying that the primary reason people join a runescape clan is that it enables them to participate in large scale fights in the wilderness with their ingame friends. However, a large part of building that friendship over time can come about through regular clan events that are organised to enable players to get to know their clan mates outside of the wilderness.

Jagex have introduced a number of mini-games that require more than one player to achieve success. This has enabled clan events to play a more prominent role in building clan relationships. The more people are able to become friends, the better chance that the clan will become stable and progress into the top ranks. The message here is getting to know more members here prevents accidents from happening when fighting in the wilderness.

Summary:

Overall, when forming a clan in runescape all new leaders should choose an appropriate name, provide a detailed list of the clan rules and regulations as well as providing realistic recruitment goals. In addition, a successful clan will be able to offer various clan events outside of the runescape wilderness and maintain strong communication links with their members through teamspeak or mIRC.

Many clans come and go quickly within runescape, it is only the properly organised clans that remain in the long term and that continue to attract elite members due to their stability and the dedication that is promoted within the clan environment.

Yes, Jagex have now built a clan chat system into runescape. Hopefully this is the start of Jagex catering to build more clan features.

Personally, I would like Jagex to bring in a clan battle arena where armour of the losing side went into a 'reward chest' that could be picked up by the winning side after the war was finished.
